From a writer who does not do blogs… as
As someone new to writing, I can’t imagine a better place to live than western Massachusetts. You can’t walk two blocks without tripping over a novelist or a poet. How amazing to meet writers who are warm, welcoming, and quite generous. In a time when the publishing business is changing by the minute, I find that rather than being competitive, these writers are pulling together to help each other. Such generous spirit is illustrated beautifully by the goal of the Straw Dog Writer’s Guild (SDWG):
…to support the writing community in the four counties of Western Massachusetts – Hampden, Hampshire, Franklin and Berkshire – by strengthening, engaging and connecting writers at all levels of development.
My SDWG membership card says Founding Member, but I’m a latecomer. Many writers – of fiction, nonfiction, and poetry – have been working for years to bring their talents and energy to make SDWG a reality. About a year ago I gratefully happened upon a SDWG craft workshop. I joined pretty quickly, thinking as I usually do, that I should put my money where my mouth is and support organizations that I feel strongly about. Numerous workshops and salons later, I realize how much information, insight, and just plain enjoyment I’ve received.
To those who have been my SDWG teachers – THANK YOU – for your efforts and kindness in allowing me to take part. To those of you checking out this website and attending events, consider joining. Writing can be an isolating business. It’s so invigorating to be with others who share the privilege of the struggle.
